Which type of inventor are you? This is one of the most important questions that you will ask yourself as an inventor. Are you the type of person who is frequently coming up with new product ideas and prefers the creative process over running a business, or do you prefer taking your idea to market by running a business? In this blog, we’ll discuss the main two types of inventors: The “idea inventor “ and the “entrepreneurial inventor.
- An idea inventor enjoys creating new product ideas. The “idea inventor” is usually not the person who wants to execute the idea. They are not interested in fundraising, legal matters, or building out the team. They would much rather stick to the drawing board and inventing new products. For “idea inventors” licensing their product, once they have secured patent protection, is usually the best path to take.
- An entrepreneurial inventor like the ‘Idea inventor” loves creating new product ideas but unlike the “idea inventor” enjoys business. The “entrepreneurial inventor” would prefer to run their own company. They have the desire and skills to organize, develop and manage an idea or business venture and are also not concerned about the risks that accompany starting up a new venture.
The good news is that there are paths to success for both types of inventors. It is helpful to identify what type of inventor you are and where your strengths lie early on in order to choose the path that is right for you.
